Updated: Three Injured In Car Accident That Sent One Vehicle Into Canal

Update: William Shaw has been charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, careless driving and two counts of having open containers of alcohol within a motor vehicle, according to township police.

Original Story: Three people were injured in an automobile accident Feb. 6 that closed part of Easton Avenue for more than five hours.

Erik Harris, 30, of South River, his 29-year-old passenger – who was not identified by police – and William Shaw, 42, of  Somerset, were transported to local hospitals after the crash for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, according to a press release from township police.

Police said that Harris’ car was rear-ended by Shaw’s car on Easton Avenue, near Davidson Avenue, at about 10:16 p.m. The impact forced Shaw’s car into the canal.

Upon arrival after receiving a 9-1-1 call, police said they found the car submerged in the canal and Shaw lying on the embankment. Police said Shaw was able to escape his car and return to land on his own accord.

Divers from Somerset Fire and Rescue as well as the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Emergency Response Dive Team were on scene to assist in removing the vehicle from the water, according to the release. Officers from the South Bound Brook Police Department were also on scene to assist.

The accident is being investigated by the township police’s Traffic Safety Bureau.
