Senior Adreana Miller gave a clinic in shooting three-pointers March 17 as she led the Lady Warriors in a 66-38 Tournament of Champions quarter-final blowout of Middletown South in Pine Belt Arena, Toms River.
Nearly half of Miller’s 33 points came via the long-distance shot, mostly during the first half. It was back-to-back three-pointers by Miller and Tahira Scott when the score was tied at 4 early in the first quarter that put the Lady Warriors in a lead they never relinquished.
Miller had 10 rebounds to go with her all-player-leading 33 points, giving her a double-double.
Rounding out the Lady Warriors’ attack were Alexandra Jackson and Jaeda Wildgoose, both with 12 points; Mary Trossi with 4 points, Scott with 3 points and Monique Davis-Campbell with 2 points.
Davis-Campbell gave the Lady Warriors a scare late in the game, when she fell face-first to the court after being inadvertently punched in the stomach. After a few words from coach Audrey Taylor, Davis-Campbell jumped up with a big smile and walked court side.
Miller said she felt she had the long shot when she was warming up.
“I felt very confident,” she said.
Miller said her high point total came as a result of her teammates rewarding her for being hot.
“I was hot so they rewarded me a lot,” she said. “That’s what really matters, when they’re hot you reward your teammate. But at the end of the day it was a team effort.”
Miller said she and her teammates weren’t feeling any pressure.
“We just want to have fun,” she said.
That attitude was echoed by Taylor, who said the girls “just came out and had fun.”
“We came in with the understanding that we don’t have anything to lose,” she said. “But even though this is our first time here (in the Tournament of Champions), we didn’t want to just come in and say, ‘hey, we’re here,’ we’re here to get a ‘W.’ We want to win a championship.”
Taylor pinned the win on her team’s communication on defense and finding the open player on offense.
“On the defensive end, the communication and stopping the penetration, and also sharing the ball on offense,” she said. “They realy all shared the ball really well, made the extra pass, the open shooter knocked down the shot, and we shot very well today.”
