Patriots Take Night Cap Of Double Header 7-3

Bridgewater, NJ-   The Somerset Patriots (10-8, 52-36) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (8-11, 46-42) 7-3 at TD Bank Ballpark on Wednesday evening to sweep the day-night double header.

The Patriots took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Yovan Gonzalez.

The Blue Crabs answered with two runs in the top of the second inning to take the lead on RBI singles by Eric Fornataro and Edwin Garcia.

Somerset tied up the game in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Alfredo Rodriguez.

The Patriots jumped in front with a four-run fourth inning. Recently signed Justin Trapp hit a two-run double, his first hit and RBI for the team, and later scored on an error. Kyle Roller then added an RBI double for a 6-2 advantage.

“It’s great to get the first one out of the way and help the team in a big part of the game right there,” said Trapp. “It was a big situation in the game and it felt good to help us win.”

Southern Maryland cut the lead to 6-3 win a run in the top of the eighth inning on Patrick Palmeiro’s sacrifice fly.

Pacchioli got the run back for the Patriots with an RBI base hit in the bottom of the eighth inning to finish the game 3-for-5 with an RBI.

Will Oliver (4-2) got the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits and nine strikeouts in seven innings pitched.

“I established the fastball and really let the off-speed pitches work off of that,” said Oliver. “I’ve found myself focusing on pitching instead of throwing and it’s been successful for me.”

Fornataro (0-3) suffered the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits in four innings of work.

The 2017 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Thursday evening with a 7:05 pm game against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. The game features Fireworks presented by Sanofi. For tickets, visit www.somersetpatriots.com.
