Life Story: Robert McArdle, 81; U.S. Army Veteran

Robert McArdle, 81, died  July 2 at St. Peter’s University Medical Center in New Brunswick.

Mr. McArdle was born March 12, 1937 in Flushing, New York to the late Robert and Grace (Stevenson) McArdle. He lived in Bricktown and Jersey City before settling in Somerset with his loving and devoted wife Joan E. McArdle for 41 happy years.

Robert honored his county in the Army serving in Italy where he was a radio operator. He was a union surveyor for Local 825 and was a proud co-owner of McArdle Brothers Contracting.

He was a longtime parishioner of St. Paul’s Church in Highland Park; where he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus 6306 and Bob and Joan were members of the Development Committee. Bob was a 4th degree and current acting Grand Knight. Robert served as state treasurer of the Catholic War Veterans. He belonged to The Catholic War Veterans of New Brunswick Post 405. While a parishioner at Our Lady of Mercy in South Bound Brook he was also President of The Holy Name Society at Our Lady of Mercy.

He loved placing many bird feeders to bird watch. Most of all, he appreciated spending time with his family at their lake house in Lake Wallenpaupack, PA. Robert valued spending time with his grandchildren and treasured every moment. Bob loved to watch his sons and grandsons participating in various sporting activities.

Mr. McArdle is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Joan McArdle of Somerset; his son, John McArdle and his partner Mary Frances of Middlesex and Rob McArdle and his wife Mary of North Brunswick; his sisters, Grace Cooper, Gini Lohmeyer and Jo- Ann Seren; his grandchildren, John Martin, Patrick, Chris, Joshua, Cullen, Isaiah, Shyanne and Sara and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton St. from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.  July 6.

A Mass will be held at 10 a.m. July 7  at St. Paul Church in Highland Park. Committal services will follow at Franklin Memorial Park in North Brunswick.
