Life Story: John Paul Bednar, 88; Army Vet, High School Teacher

John Paul Bednar, 88, passed away on January 31 at his home in Somerset with his wife at his side.

John was born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. and moved to Somerset in 1966. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He received a Bachelor’s Degree from King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. and a Master’s Degree from the University of Scranton, Scranton, Pa.

John was an avid golf player and also enjoyed playing tennis, soccer, and racquetball. He was employed as a high school teacher by the Piscataway Township school district. He retired in 1987.

He was a member of both the Franklin Township and Franklin Park Senior Citizens Clubs.

Besides his parents, Mary and Paul Bednar, John was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Paddock.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Florence Bednar, and a nephew, Thomas Paddock of Somerset.

Viewing will be at 9 a.m. on Feb. 4 at the Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton St. Following the viewing, a mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mercy Church 122 High St. South Bound Brook at 10:30 a.m.

Entombment will be in the Mausoleum of the Queen of the Apostles at St. Peter’s Cemetery 94 Somerset St.
