Life Story: Gloria Glickman, 88; Championship Golfer, Gourmet Cook, Volunteer

Gloria Diane Glickman, 88, passed away peacefully on Dec. 30.

Gloria was born in Manhattan and raised in the Bronx. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Edward and Evelyn Levy, and sister of the late Madelyn Marks.

Gloria was among the first women to attend New York University, and graduated with a degree in business. She met her husband Bill at a wedding, and in 1951 they married. They lived 45 years in Westfield, NJ before moving to Somerset.

Gloria was an avid golfer and two-time Twin Brooks Country Club champion. She also enjoyed playing tennis and bridge, traveling, and was a self-taught gourmet cook. Gloria had a warm and vibrant personality, and she loved socializing. She was very active in her community. She volunteered as a speech therapist at the Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside and at Spaulding for Children adoption agency. She also translated books into braille for the Library of Congress.

Gloria was the beloved wife of 65 years to Bill, who throughout her illness was always by her side. She was the much loved mother of Lori Laureano and her late husband Mark, Barry Glickman and his wife Jessica, Jill Becker and her husband Craig. She will be greatly missed by her four grandchildren David, Brian, Emily and Molly.

The funeral will be held at 1 o’clock in the afternoon on Jan. 2, at Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton St., followed by her interment at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge.
