Life Story: Esta Marx, 74; Longtime Elementary School Teacher

Esta Marx, born May 4, 1944 in Newark, passed at the age of 74 on July 29.

She graduated Irvington High School and attended Newark State College. She taught for many years at James Madison Elementary School in Edison. Over her life, she was active within her synagogue, first with Ohev Shalom in Colonia, where she was president of Sisterhood and a life member of Hadassah, and Neve Shalom in Metuchen after that, where she participated in numerous committees.

More recently she put her energy into her new residence at Somerset Run, staying active in Women’s Club by running multiple events and trips. But only when those activities wouldn’t prevent spending time with her beloved grandchildren.

Esta was predeceased by her parents, Max and Rose Roth, and her brother, Ray. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Daniel Marx, her children Amy, her husband Jason, her son Mitchell, and his wife Ellen. She also leaves behind her adoring grandchildren, Zoey, Will, and Shawn, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. July 31 at Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton St.

Burial will follow at Beth Israel Cemetery, US Highway 1 North, Woodbridge. Shiva will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at the home of Amy Blake.

For those wishing to do so, donations can be made to the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
