Deadline Looms for Villagers’ New Playwrights Series Submissions

The deadline for aspiring playwrights to submit their scripts to the Villagers New Playwrights Series is Oct.15.

Selected straight plays will be presented as staged readings in the Zaidi Black Box Theatre from February to March, 2014, according to the program’s Web site.

The series is intended to “provide playwrights with an opportunity to glimpse the performance potential of their works in progress,” according to the Web site. “Additional goals are to provide alternative performance opportunities for our local actors and directors and to expose our local audiences to new works.”

Preference will be given to New Jersey playwrights.

Playwrights whose pieces are selected will be required to attend the readings and participate in discussions with the audience.

According to the Web site, submission guidelines are:

    • Script word count must be 25,000 words or less.
    • All submissions must include character breakdown and detailed synopsis in order to be considered.
    • Please include brief bio and contact information.
    • Scripts must be original, unpublished works. They welcome all comedies, dramas and farces of professional quality.
    • One-act plays and shorter scripts will be considered, in addition to full-length scripts.
    • Musical plays will not be considered.
    • Although smaller casts (under 8 characters) are preferred, there is no limit on cast size. They also prefer shows designed to be performed on one set, with an eye toward future community theatre productions.
    • No hardcopy paper manuscripts will be accepted.  All submissions must be digital and sent via e-mail to
