Youth Leadership Somerset, a leadership development program for Somerset County youth entering grades 9-12, is accepting applications for the 2018-2019 program year, which runs September through May. Classes are held one Saturday per month for approximately four to six hours. The application deadline is Monday, May 16.

“Somerset County is dedicated to investing in our youth and leaders of tomorrow,” said Freeholder Director Patrick Scaglione, liaison to the youth leadership program. “The Youth Leadership Somerset program helps students expand their critical thinking, collaboration and communications skills. Participants will be introduced to community leaders and challenged to explore current issues that impact their communities.”

The application is available on the county website – Youth Leadership Somerset Application 2018. Students are asked to complete the online application and upload one letter of recommendation. The application should be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on May 16.

Candidates will be selected in June. Those accepted to the program will receive a full scholarship to ensure that financial status is not a barrier.

Youth Leadership Somerset fellows interact with community leaders on a wide variety of subjects. Session topics include leadership, the environment, economic development, human services, government, healthcare, justice and culture.

Former participants have said: “Youth Leadership Somerset has been a wonderful place to ponder important economic and social questions. The sessions have been filled with discovery and growth;” “I have a greater understanding of how to get involved in my community;” and “Connecting and learning from people who are different than me has made me a better person.”

Developed by the Leadership Somerset Class of 2000, Youth Leadership Somerset is sponsored by the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
