York, PA – The two clubs combined to club six home runs but the York Revolution (21-14) bested the Somerset Patriots (20-15) 7-5 in the series opener from PeoplesBank Park. The Revolution extended their winning streak to four in a row while the Patriots dropped their fourth straight contest.
“We know we have been struggling, but we just have to stay positive. We always bring good energy, but we are going to go through this and get out of this as a team. We’ll get out of this and be fine as it’s still early,” remarked Yovan Gonzalez as the team just opened up a seven game road trip.
York plated the first six runs of the game within the first two innings. Joel Guzman socked a two-run home run (6) in the first inning while James Simmons added an RBI double and Isaias Tejeda launched a three-run home run (1) in the second frame.
Somerset scored an unearned run in the third inning and Gonzalez blasted his first home run of the year to cut the deficit to 6-3 in the fifth inning.
“I’m always just trying to put the barrel on the ball and put a good swing on it,” said Gonzalez of his towering two-run home run. Seven of his 15 hits this season are for extra bases.
Tejeda would drill another home run (2) in the ensuing half inning as the Revolution stretched its lead to 7-3. He had no homers in his first 22 games, but drove two over the wall tonight.
Somerset would connect on back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning. Both Mycal Jones (1) and Aharon Eggleston (4) drilled homers over the Green Monster out in left field to cut the deficit to 7-5.
That score would ultimately be the final as Somerset’s best chance to leapfrog in front came an inning later when they stranded the bases loaded.
Jeremy Horst (2-1) suffered the loss, allowing seven run (six earned) in six innings pitched. Mariel Checo (2-0) earned the win in relief. With usual closer Mike DeMark unavailable due to work load, Julio DePaula notched his first save throwing a perfect ninth inning.
The 2016 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford continues on the road until the team returns to TD Bank Ballpark on Friday, June 3rd for a 7:05 p.m. game against Bridgeport Bluefish.
