Bridgewater, NJ- The Somerset Patriots have announced that right-handed pitchers Kyler Newby and Brett Brach have been signed by Major League organizations.
Newby will be joining the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim organization and reporting to Triple-A.
Newby did not allow a run in 11 innings pitched in 11 games and struck out 10 this season for Somerset.
Before joining Somerset, Newby had experience in the Arizona Diamondbacks, Baltimore Orioles, and Oakland Athletics organizations, including three seasons at the Triple-A level.
Newby was 2-1 with a 3.58 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 27.2 innings pitched in 24 games at Triple-A for the A’s last season.
He has a minor league career 39-24 record, a 3.10 ERA, and 620 strikeouts in 564.0 innings pitched in 319 games.
Brach has been signed by the Washington Nationals organization and is reporting to Single-A.
Brach just joined the Patriots this past weekend and had a great debut, starting in Sunday’s game. He picked up the win, allowing just two hits in five scoreless innings pitched.
Before joining the Patriots, the Freehold, New Jersey native had time in the Cleveland Indians organization, reaching the Triple-A level in three seasons.
He began this year in Columbus, the team’s Triple-A affiliate. Brach has a minor league career 3.72 ERA and 399 strikeouts in 624 innings pitched in 127 games.
The two signings make it four pitchers to be claimed by Major League organizations off the Patriots roster this week. They join Zach Kroenke (Washington Nationals) and Matt Maloney (Cincinnati Reds) as members of Somerset’s pitching staff to have their contracts purchased. There have been five total players signed from the Patriots this year, including Dennis Raben (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim), who signed during this first weekend of the season.
The 2014 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Monday, June 2nd when the Patriots return home to take on the York Revolution for a 7:05 pm game. For tickets, call (908) 252-0700 or visit www.somersetpatriots.com.
