Bridgeport, CT – The Somerset Patriots (4-4, 50-27) defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish (5-3, 27-51) 6-1 Friday evening in the series opener from Harbor Yard.
In the top of the first inning the Patriots plated a pair of runs to take an early 2-0 advantage. A run scored via a Dontrelle Willis wild pitch and another run came across on right fielder Luis Montanez’s RBI single.
The Bluefish scored in the bottom of the first inning on shortstop Jeff Dominguez’s throwing error that cut the deficit in half at 2-1.
Dominguez sliced a two RBI double in the top of the fifth inning to expand Somerset’s lead to 4-1.
Somerset added two more runs in the top of the eighth inning to increase its lead to 6-1. Third baseman Corey Smith and first baseman Ty Wright tallied RBI singles.
Gary Moran (7-3) earned the win tossing seven innings allowing no earned runs while striking out a season-high nine batters. Willis (0-1) suffered the loss lasting five innings surrendering four runs.
