Patriots Start Road Trip With 11-1 Win Over Skeeters

85oliverwebSugar Land, TX – The Somerset Patriots (14-14, 52-46) used 17 hits and eight walks to comfortably defeat the Sugar Land Skeeters (17-12, 52-47) 11-1 Friday evening at Constellation Field in the series opener.

 

“A night like this is so much fun when everyone is contributing and playing the game so well,” said Luis Mateo, who had four RBI tonight.

 

In the top of the first inning Eric Farris hit an RBI single to give the Patriots an early 1-0 advantage.

 

The Skeeters evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the third inning on an RBI fielder’s choice by Delwyn Young.

 

The Patriots would score the final 10 runs of the game, five of which came in the fifth inning. Carlos Guzman socked an RBI sacrifice fly and Yovan Gonzalez recorded an RBI single to make the score 3-1. Mateo put the game out of reach with a three-run home run (2) to deep left field.

 

“I know I can play defense, but I’ve just working on my offense and good things happened tonight with my approach,” Mateo said.

Gonzalez drew a bases loaded walk in the eighth inning while Mateo and Vinny Zarrillo added RBI singles. Aharon Eggleston legged out an RBI fielder’s choice to make the score 11-1, which would be the final.

 

Will Oliver (2-2) earned the win, hurling eight innings with just one run in 95 pitches. Sean Gallagher (7-6) suffered the loss as he lasted 4.1 innings, allowing five walks and five runs.
