Lancaster, PA – The Somerset Patriots (32-14) defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers (19-28) 5-4 Thursday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Somerset scored four unanswered runs to erase a three run deficit to win the series opener.
In the top of the third inning catcher James Skelton hit a RBI sacrifice fly to give Somerset a 1-0 advantage.
Lancaster plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning to grab a 2-1 lead. Second baseman Luke Hughes and right fielder Brian Cavazos-Galvez each roped RBI singles.
First baseman Kevin Rivers smacked a towering two run home run (4) to expand the Barnstormers lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth frame.
In the ensuing half inning designated hitter Mat Gamel socked a home run (3) to cut the deficit to 4-2.
The Patriots scratched across a run in the top of the eighth inning on a pair of fielding errors by the Barnstormers to make the score 4-3.
Skelton ripped a game tying RBI double and third baseman David Vidal laced a go ahead RBI single as the Patriots catapulted in front to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth inning.
Kyler Newby earned the win (5-2) in relief. Scott Patterson suffered the loss (0-1) as he also blew the save. Jon Hunton notched the save (9) pitching a perfect final inning.
