Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots (35-15) defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish (19-30) 8-1 Tuesday evening at TD Bank Ballpark.
In the bottom of the second inning second baseman Nate Spears ripped a RBI double to give Somerset a 1-0 advantage.
Third baseman Sean Burroughs tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning as he blooped a RBI single.
Somerset exploded for five runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to grab a 6-1 lead. Designated hitter Thomas Neal and left fielder Michael Burgess each roped RBI singles while third baseman Greg Hopkins drew a bases loaded walk. Spears hammered a two RBI single as well.
The Patriots added a run in the home half of the seventh inning as first baseman David Vidal clubbed a RBI single increasing the lead to 7-1 in favor of Somerset.
Neal drove home a run via a RBI infield single in the bottom of the eighth inning to up the score to 8-1.
Matt Zielinski earned the win (2-1) tossing a complete game allowing just one run on five hits while striking out five and walking none. He retired the last 11 batters he faced. Scott Maine endured the loss (2-5) as he allowed five runs in five innings of work.
