For the first time in its history, the Franklin Township High School cheerleading squad has earned a  berth in a national competition.

The 23-member squad has its sights set on the Universal Cheerleading Association’s High School National Championships, slated for Feb. 7 to 9, 2014 at Walt Disney World’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Center in Florida.

The girls earned the right to compete by winning the Large Varsity Non-Tumble Division at the Nov. 23 UCA regional competition in Toms River.

The squad is running a fundraising campaign to help pay for the Florida trip. Those who would like to donate may do so at its GoFundMe site.

“This will be the first time FHS will be represented in a National Cheerleading Competition, and we would like the opportunity to bring back a trophy to Somerset,” squad coach Katie VanWhy said in an email.
