Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots have announced that former relief pitcher Buddy Boshers has been called up to the Major Leagues by the Minnesota Twins.
He becomes the 15th Somerset Patriots player to spend time with the team and move on to the Major League level, the most in the Atlantic League. He is the first since outfielder Michael Ryan, who was called up by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2010. In 2008 alone, four former Somerset Patriots were serving in Major League Baseball.
“We are very happy for Buddy and it’s certainly well deserved. He put up great numbers here and in the Twins organization to get the shot. That along with the work of his scout Billy Milos to work diligently to scout him here, sign him and the Twins seeing what they have in Buddy, all gave him this chance. It’s great for him and the Patriots and reinforces the reason why these talented players come to the Atlantic League,” said Somerset Patriots manager Brett Jodie.
Boshers was the 2015 Atlantic League Relief Pitcher of the Year, finishing with a 1.00 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 54 innings pitched over 52 games for Somerset.
At Triple-A Rochester to start the 2016 season, Boshers was 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA, two saves and 12 strikeouts in 19.0 innings pitched over 15 games.
The Huntsville, Alabama native has nine years of professional baseball experience. Prior to joining the Somerset Patriots last year, Boshers had Major League service with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2013. That year, the southpaw reliever appeared in 25 games and struck out 13 batters in 15.1 innings of work.
In 2014, Boshers split time between Double-A Arkansas and Triple-A Salt Lake, with a combined 3.28 ERA over 40 appearances (eight starts) with 82 strikeouts in 74 innings of work.
The former fourth-round draft pick from Calhoun Community College owns a career 36-17 record with a 3.38 ERA and 606 strikeouts in 362 appearances.
He was one of seven players on last year’s squad to be signed by a Major League organization in 2015.
