Stage 3 fire restrictions have been lifted by the state Department of Environmental Protection, but authorities urge caution.
Drought conditions persist, so safety tips should be followed, according to a press release from Franklin Township.
Here are some key fire safety tips to keep in mind:
- Safe Distance: Always place fire pits at least 10 feet away from any building, tree, or other flammable material.
- Containment: Use a metal screen over wood-burning fires to prevent embers from escaping.
- Preparedness: Keep a garden hose or fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergencies.
- Lighting Fires: Use fire starter sticks or similar products to ignite fires safely. Avoid gasoline or kerosene, which can lead to dangerous flare-ups.
- Proper Fuel: Burn only dry, seasoned hardwood like oak, hickory, or ash. Softwoods such as cedar or pine are prone to excessive sparking.
- Extinguishing Fires: Ensure all fires are fully extinguished before leaving them unattended. Embers should be cool to the touch.
- Grill Safety: When grilling, place grills away from siding, deck railings, or overhanging branches. Never leave an active grill unattended.
While the easing of restrictions allows for more outdoor fire activities, exercising caution and common sense is essential to protect your family and community.
