Bridgewater, NJ – The Bridgeport Bluefish (14-11) doubled up the Somerset Patriots (17-8) 6-3 Wednesday evening in the second game of a day-night doubleheader.
In the top of the first inning designated hitter John Alonso cranked a two RBI double to give Bridgeport a 2-0 advantage.
Center fielder Nick Van Stratten slapped a RBI single in the top of the fifth to expand the Bluefish lead to 3-0.
Bridgeport added to its lead with a pair of seventh inning runs as Alonso brought home a run via a RBI fielder’s choice and another run crossed via shortstop Robert Andino’s throwing error.
The Patriots cut the deficit to 5-2 in the ensuing half inning when first baseman Mat Gamel ripped a RBI triple and second baseman Nate Spears hit a RBI sacrifice fly.
Center fielder Jonny Tucker hammered a home run (1) to make the score 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning which would be the final score.
Cory Riordan earned the win (1-0) tossing eight innings while allowing three runs on five hits. Lucas Irvine sustained the loss (1-3) hurling six innings while allowing just one earned run. Patrick Mincy pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his first save of the year.
