Cedar Grove Lane got a new, albeit honorary, name on May 4: Interfaith Lane.
The action reflects the large number of houses of worship located on the roughly 3-mile road, between its intersections with Easton Avenue and Amwell Road.
The honorary name was the brainchild of Alex Kharazi, president of the Franklin Township Interfaith Alliance and one of teh founders of the Masjid-e-Ali Mosque, which is one of the houses of worship on Cedar Grove Lane.
The mosque shares the street with other religious centers, such as Rutgers Community Christian Church, Somerset Bible Baptist Church, Praise Presbyterian Church, the Jain Center of New Jersey and the Ananda Mandir Hindu temple.
Kharazi won the Township Council’s support for his idea in December 2016, and Somerset County Freeholder Brian Levine secured the county’s OK, needed because Cedar Grove Lane is a county road.
The first new sign proclaiming that Cedar Grove Lane will now also be known as Interfaith Lane was placed at the intersection of New Brunswick Road, which is where the ceremonial naming took place.
The honorary renaming will not affect any addresses on Cedar Grove Lane.
The ceremony – including the presentation to Dr. Kharazi of a plaque commemorating his being named the Franklin Reporter & Advocate’s Man of the Year for 2016 – is chronicled in the video below.
