Youth Leadership Somerset, a leadership development program for Somerset County youth entering grades 9-12, is accepting applications for the 2017/2018 program year, which runs September through May. Classes are held one Saturday per month for approximately four to six hours. The application deadline is Monday, May 15.

“The Youth Leadership Somerset program helps students expand their critical thinking, collaboration and communications skills,” said Freeholder Director Peter S. Palmer, liaison to the youth leadership program. “Participants will be introduced to community leaders and challenged to explore current issues that impact their communities.”

The application is available online at www.co.somerset.nj.us/YLSApplication. Students are asked to email the completed application to youthleadership@co.somerset.nj.us, and to mail a signed copy of the application and the reference letter to Youth Leadership Somerset, c/o Melania Tchir, Somerset County, P.O. Box 3000, Somerville, NJ 08876-1262. The application should be postmarked no later than May 15.

Candidates will be selected in June. Those accepted to the program will receive a full scholarship to ensure that financial status is not a barrier.

Youth Leadership Somerset fellows interact with community leaders on a wide variety of subjects. Session topics include leadership, economic development, human services, government, healthcare, justice and culture.

Former participants have said: “Thanks for all that you do. I have truly had a great experience and learned so much through this amazing program! Thanks for all your hard work;” and “I wish to thank you for the experience that I have gained from the program. It’s an amazing program and I wish you a lot of success going forward.”

Developed by the Leadership Somerset Class of 2000, Youth Leadership Somerset is sponsored by the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
