More than two dozen township 7th to 10th graders participated this week in the Police Department’s Youth Academy.

The academy, now in its 4th year, gives youth an opportunity to experience was police cadets go through in the academy, said township Det. Kevin Fitzharris, the youth academy’s coordinator.

“We’re trying to give them a realistic view of what the police academy is like for adults,” he said.

Activities on July 17 included a drill, driving golf courts through an obstacle course while wearing “Fatal Vision” impairment goggles and getting a presentation from the New Jersey State Police’s K-9 Unit.

“They learned about patrol tactics, and we did a SWAT demonstration yesterday,” Fitzharris said.

The students “graduate” when the program ends at 2 p.m. July 18, he said.

In addition to Fitzharris, instructors and coordinators for the academy were:

Assistant Class Coordinator- Ofc. Flanders; Senior Drill Instructor- Ofc. Almora; Processional- Ptl. Booker.
