Township Council Approves New Rec Park, Sans Bocce Courts

Summerfields park concept planThe design of a new recreation park, to be built by the developer of the Summerfields housing project, was approved Jan. 28 by the Township Council.

And although a concept plan shows two bocce ball courts, they’re not included in the final design.

What is included, though is a softball diamond, a “tot lot,” a high school-regulation size soccer field, two basketball courts and two tennis courts, as well as a parking area.

Building the park, which will be off Weston Canal Road, is part of the approval granted for the Sumerfields development. The developer has a year to create the new space.

The exclusion of the bocce courts didn’t sit well with Councilman James Vassanella, (D-Ward 5).

“It would be nice, in out 47 square miles, if a couple courts could be slipped in somewhere in the township,” he said. “we’ll find a place somewhere down the road for some.”

Councilman Carl R.A. Wright (D-Ward 4), a member of the recreation advisory committee, said the committee did talk about including bocce courts in the design.

“We came to the conclusion that it would be nice, but it’s not in the original agreement, and there’s no money to fund it,” he said.
