Somerset Patriots RHP David Kubiak Named Atlantic League Pitcher of the Month

Bridgewater, NJ – Somerset Patriots ace David Kubiak has been named Atlantic League Pitcher of the Month for April/May for his outstanding 4-0 record and a 0.95 ERA during an amazing start to the 2019 season.

Kubiak has shown his dominance and consistency throughout the first month of the season, making the award well deserved. During his final start of May he broke the team’s all-time consecutive scoreless innings streak, smashing the previous record of 23.1 and well on his way to 26+ innings of no run work. The streak ended at 33.2 scoreless innings pitched on June 5th.

“It’s well deserved. He’s been dominant and really what we’ve needed throughout the year,” said Somerset Patriots manager Brett Jodie. “The team feels great and very confident when he goes out to the mound. He wants to finish a game when he’s out there and is a true horse that will do whatever is needed to win a game.”

The way Kubiak has pitched has been eye-catching to say the least. Standing at 6’7”, 230 lbs., Kubiak has towered over his opponents, and used strikeouts as his main weapon to get batters out. Through 38 innings of work during April and May, he recorded 34 strikeouts, while allowing only four runs total.

Better yet, Kubiak has seemingly limited any damage in each of his first six starts. Two of his four runs allowed have been from solo homeruns. Both homeruns came in the first inning in two separate games. Kubiak has shown the master ability to shake off mistakes and power through for a complete performance.

His most impressive performance came on May 10th, where he went seven innings, allowing just one hit and striking out 11 batters. The one hit was a solo shot in the first inning, but Kubiak went on to retire the next 20 batters.

Through the first two months he has held batters to a .185 average, while commanding a 0.97 whip. The 29-year-old right hander ranked at the top of the league in ERA, wins, average and whip through the first month and change. He also remained in the top five of innings pitched and strikeouts.

“It’s great to receive this award. It is obviously something that was not attained by myself,” said Kubiak. “I have to give [catcher Yovan Gonzalez] at least half, if not more, of the credit. Especially with the scoreless inning streak, which I know doesn’t happen without him.”

As for the hitters, High Point Rockers infielder Dante Bichette Jr. was named the Atlantic League Player of the Month, slashing .414, knocking in 20 RBI with a .999 OPS.

Hard fought, and well deserved, Kubiak will look to be the Atlantic League’s top pitcher for many months to come.
