Purcey Propels Patriots To 5-4 Victory

8114recapBridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots (13-10, 60-33) defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers (12-10, 51-41) 5-4 Friday evening from TD Bank Ballpark.

 

In the bottom of the first inning the Patriots plated a pair of runs to take a 2-0 advantage. Designated hitter Daryle Ward hit a RBI infield single while third baseman Corey Smith tallied a RBI sacrifice fly.

 

Smith smacked a two RBI double in the home half of the second inning to expand Somerset’s lead to 4-0.

 

Second baseman Jeff Dominguez sliced a RBI single to up the score to 5-0 in the third inning.

 

Lancaster scored in the top of the sixth inning when shortstop Scott Kelly made a throwing error that made the contest 5-1.

 

The Barnstormers scored three times in the top of the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 5-4. Shortstop Lance Zawadzki ripped a two RBI single and another run scored on a fielding error by right fielder Luis Montanez.

 

David Purcey (1-0) earned the win as he had a no hitter through 6.1 innings of play. Mark Rogers (3-6) endured the loss surrendering seven walks through 2.2 innings of play. Jon Hunton earned his Atlantic League leading 33rd save by tossing a scoreless final frame.
