Police: Somerset Man Killed In Early Morning One-Car Crash On Route 518

BLS-Ambulance-ER1A 74-year-old Somerset man was killed early July 14 when his car crashed into a tree on Route 518, police said.

Police said Augustus Browne was traveling west on Rt. 518 when his car crossed the center line, left the road and hit a tree head-on.

Police received a 9-1-1 call about the accident at approximately 4:47 a.m., according to a release from township police.

Browne was “unresponsive and unconscious” when first responders arrived, police said. He was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries, police said.

The accident investigation closed Rt. 518 between Canal Road and Carroll Place until about 8 a.m. while members of the police department’s Traffic Safety Bureau investigated the crash, police said.
