Patriots Open Road Trip With 9-3 Win Over Bluefish

819vankirkwebBridgeport, CT – The Somerset Patriots (23-19, 61-51) tripled up the Bridgeport Bluefish (22-19, 52-59) 9-3 in the first game of a pivotal three game weekend series at Harbor Yard. Somerset has won eight of its last 10 games. For the 14th time in the last 15 games the offense registered at least five runs and they added 21 base runners (14 hits and 7 walks) in this contest.

“On the bus ride over, I could tell that myself and my teammates were locked in and knew what was at stake,” said Yovan Gonzalez who finished 2-for-3 with three RBI. “We wanted to get back in first place where we belong and with tonight’s win we accomplished that.”

For the 12th time in the last 16 games the Patriots plated at least one run in the first inning. Bryan LaHair ripped an RBI single while Gonzalez added an RBI sacrifice fly.

The Patriots expanded their lead to 3-0 in the second inning as Aharon Eggleston laced an RBI single.

Kyle Roller cranked a two-run home run (4) to give the Patriots a 5-0 advantage in the third inning.

Bridgeport got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when Jose Gil sliced an RBI double.

Somerset broke the game open in the sixth inning as they scored four times to stretch the lead to 9-1. LaHair tallied an RBI single, a run scored on a wild pitch from Matt Iannazzo and Gonzalez hit a two-run single.

“It’s so much easier when you are scoring early and often because we are in control and defensively it’s easier to call a game,” Gonzalez said of his offense.

Sean Burroughs drilled a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 9-3, which would be the final.

Shaun Garceau (4-3) earned the win, yielding three runs in six innings of work. He has yet to lose in six starts since the All-Star Break. Ross Seaton (0-2) suffered the loss, surrendering five runs in three innings.

The 2016 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford continues on the road until the team returns to TD Bank Ballpark on Tuesday, August 23rd for a 7:05 p.m. game against the Lancaster Barnstormers.
