Life Story: James Whang, 79; Avid Yankees Fan, Tennis Player

Mr. James Whang passed away on Thursday at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Somerville. He was 79 years old.

Mr. Whang was born in Taiwan and came to the United States in his early 30s. He studied at the Louisiana State University and settled in North Plainfield. He lived in Queens, Metuchen and Edison before moving to Somerset in 2007.

He was employed by Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield for many years as the Supervisor of the Pathology department. He retired from Princeton Diagnostic Laboratories of America as a Lab Supervisor.

Mr. Whang was a baseball fan, rooting always for the New York Yankees. He spent many spring days playing for company softball and baseball teams. He was also an avid tennis player and could be found on the court at Canal Walk on any given day.

He was pre-deceased by his wife Chin C. Whang in 2010. He was also pre-deceased by a brother.

He is survived by his children, Dr. Michael Whang and his wife Sylvia Lien of Pelham, NY and his daughter Linda Whang of Somerset. He is also survived by his two grandchildren Lauren and Ella and a sister in Taiwan.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 4:15 p.m. May 7 at the Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton St. Friends and family may visit from 2 p.m. until the start of the ceremony on May 7.
