Life Stories: John Livak, 94; Original Army Special Forces Member

John Livak, of Somerset, passed away to be with God on Nov. 15. He was born in Fords to the late Anna and James Livak on February 28, 1922.

John was devoted to his family and faith and will be sadly missed by his children; Joan Dunn of Las Vegas, Nv. and John C. Livak (Carol) of Somerset; grandchildren; Peggy St Cyr (Chris) of Katy, Texas, Jay Dunn of Orange, Ca., Sandy Sohl (Aaron) of High Bridge, and Travis Livak of Somerset; great-grandchildren; Chelsi Dunn of Orange, Ca., Mackenzie and John Sohl of High Bridge. He will also be missed by his loving siblings; Elizabeth, Susan, & Ruth of Somerset, Dorthy Kalinowski of Manville, and Paul (Irene) of Millstown Township. He was preceded in death by his wife; Helen of 65 years and his 3 brothers and 5 sisters.

John was a carpenter, building custom homes in Somerset and Middlesex counties. He was a part-time resident of Boynton Beach, Fla., always loving the warm Florida winters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received commendations for his valor and participation in the creation of the First Special Service Force. He was known for this love of his family, gardening skills and his repairing skills with duct tape and bailing wire.

The viewing will be held 7 – 9 p.m. Nov. 18,  at Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton Street. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Nov. 19 at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Franklin Memorial Park in North Brunswick.
