Electrical Fire Displaces Three Families

An electrical fire at the Hempstead Gardens Apartments on Hempstead Drive forced three families out of their homes on Dec. 7, police said.

The fire was reported at about 3:45 p.m., according to a press release from the township police department. When officers arrived, they discovered that two apartment units were engulfed in flames, according to the release.

Police immediately began to evacuate residents in the remaining 10 buildings, the release said.

One firefighter was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for treatment of a hand injury, the release said.

The fire was extinguished at approximately 4:35 p.m., the release said. Two apartments suffered major fire, smoke and water damage, while a third apartment suffered minor smoke damage. The three families are staying with friends or family in the area, according to the release.

The remaining residents were allowed to return to their apartments at about 6:45 p.m.

Firefighters from Franklin Park Fire Company, Griggstown Fire Company, Little Rocky Hill Fire Company, Middlebush Fire Company and Somerset Fire and Rescue responded, according to the release.

Emergency medical personnel from Robert Wood Johnson EMS, Franklin-Somerset EMS and Kendall Park EMS also responded.
