Bees Top Patriots 4-1 In Divisional Battle
Bridgewater, NJ – The New Britain Bees (32-30, 68-64) topped the Somerset Patriots (35-27, 73-59) 4-1 on Saturday evening at TD Bank Ballpark.
New Britain took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Michael Crouse.
The Bees extended the lead with a run in the second inning on an RBI single by Greg Golson that made the score 2-0.
Josh Mazzola hit his first home run as a Patriot in the bottom of the second inning to cut the lead in half with Somerset’s lone run in the game.
“I thought Josh had some pretty good at bats. He came up with a lot of runners in scoring position tonight. He hit one off the end of the bat and then just missed a grand slam later,” said Somerset Patriots manager Brett Jodie.
New Britain scored again on a bases loaded walk in the fifth inning and a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning for the 4-1 final.
Mike Lee (8-5) allowed a run on four hits in 5.2 innings pitched for the win. Shaun Garceau (4-5) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on four hits in 4.2 innings pitched. Rob Bryson earned his fourth save of the season.
“They were threatening every inning. I thought our pitchers did a good job of not giving up the big hit that gave us a chance to stay in there. Then they did a good job of keeping us at bay,” Jodie added.
The 2016 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford continues at home for the final regular season home game on Sunday versus the New Britain Bees at 1:05 pm.
