Waldorf, MD – The Somerset Patriots (28-25, 66-57) scored three times in the fifth inning to break the tie and ultimately defeat the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (24-28, 50-72) 5-2 Wednesday evening from Regency Furniture Stadium.
“This was a hard fought, crisp game by us,” said Jon Hunton who notched his league leading 34th save by throwing a perfect 12 pitch bottom of the 9th inning. “In years past we have usually clinched a spot at this point, but we know every game matters as we are looking to get ahead in the standings.”
In the top of the third inning, Vinny Zarrillo laced an RBI double while Aharon Eggleston added an RBI single to give the Patriots a 2-0 advantage.
Angel Sanchez socked a two-run home run (7) to even the contest at 2-2 in the fifth inning.
Somerset took the lead in the ensuing half inning. Carlos Guzman muscled an RBI single to give the Patriots the lead. Zarrillo provided insurance with a two-run triple. Zarrillo finished a homer shy of the cycle and three RBI.
Alexis Candelario (2-1) earned his second straight win. He yielded two runs in six innings of work. Daryl Thompson (4-8) suffered the loss, allowing five runs in 5.2 innings. The Patriots bullpen retired the final nine batters they faced.
