Waldorf, Maryland – The Somerset Patriots (34-27) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (25-36) 6-2 Tuesday night at Regency Furniture Stadium.
The Blue Crabs quickly jumped ahead on a Teodoro Martinez sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning. That lead held until the fifth inning.
Somerset would grab the lead in the top of the fifth on a two-out, two-run single from Endy Chavez. The Patriots opened up the ballgame an inning later on a bases-clearing three-run triple to right-center field from Mike Fransoso and a sacrifice fly from Yovan Gonzalez.
Frank Martinez (4) lined a solo home run off of Mike Antonini to trim the Patriots’ lead to 6-2, but the Blue Crabs failed to get closer.
David Kubiak (4-1) allowed just one run over seven-plus innings with eight strikeouts to earn the win. Casey Delgado (4-5) yielded six runs over 5.1 innings to take the loss.
At the time of this posting, the Patriots’ magic number to clinch the division is at one. That means should Somerset win another game in the first half or the New Britain Bees lose one more game, the Patriots will clinch the the First Half Liberty Division Championship.
The Patriots and Blue Crabs continue their four-game series Wednesday night. Right-handed pitcher Cory Riordan (3-3, 3.07 ERA) takes the mound for Somerset against Blue Crabs’ righty Brandon Cumpton (4-3, 4.11 ERA). First pitch at Regency Furniture Stadium is set for 6:35 p.m.
The 2018 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford continues on Friday, July 6th when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark to take on the Road Warriors at 7:05 pm. For tickets, visit www.somersetpatriots.com
