It wasn’t looking too good for the Franklin High School Lady Warriors basketball team about half-way through the third quarter March 10.
The Warriors had fallen 12 points behind the East Orange Lady Jaguars in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section II Group IV finals. That was after having led by 10 in the second quarter.
But by the end of that quarter, the Warriors cut East Orange’s lead to two points, 36-34, outscoring their opponents 11-3 in the last 3:45 of that period.
The Warriors tied it at 36 about 40 seconds into the final frame, after which both teams traded the lead until there were about three minutes remaining.
The theWarriors took control, finally outscoring East Orange 16-7 in the fourth quarter.
Warriors’ coach Audrey Taylor said there was no big secret to her teams’ win.
“It was about them staying together, sticking together, maintaining composure and doing the things that we know we do best, which is play as a team,” she said.
“When we started doing a little one-on-one, they were getting a lot of steals,” she said. “Once we started playing as a team, that changed the outcome of it.”
Taylor said she wasn’t worried when her team was down by 12 points.
She thought “we had to play defense, we had to make stops,” she said.
“We play as five,” Taylor said. “When one person shines, we never know what game is going to be who’s game, so we play as a unit.”
As it turned out, it was Adriana Miller’s night, as she led the team with 14 points.
