The Franklin High School varsity boys soccer team grabbed its first victory of the season on Sept. 11 with a 1-0 double overtime victory over the visiting Phillipsburg squad.
The winning goal came with 7:15 left in the second OT period when junior defensive midfielder Patrick August battled through several defenders and found the net on a point-blank shot.
“I just had to move out and make some space for myself, and I just shot,” August said after the game. “We played hard, and it was a well-deserved win.”
Warriors coach Matthew Roberts called the game a “well-fought match from the boys. They worked hard and deserved the win.”
What looked like the game-winning goal by Phillipsburg in the first overtime was nullified because the ball was declared dead.
With the win, the Warriors are 1-2 for the young season.
