Blue Crabs Avoid Sweep With Extra Inning Win Over Patriots

814kellywebBridgewater, NJ – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (15-21, 41-65) defeated the Somerset Patriots (19-18, 57-50) 6-5 in 12 innings on Sunday evening at TD Bank Ballpark.

Zach Wilson’s RBI double in the top of the 12th inning broke the 5-5 tie and led the Blue Crabs to the win. The Patriots threatened with the tying run at third in the bottom of the inning, but could not bring home the runner.

“It’s definitely frustrating because you have to win those games at home. We had the opportunities to do it, but we also have to be able to hold on to the lead in these games,” said Somerset Patriots manager Brett Jodie.

Somerset took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a double play that allowed Scott Kelly to cross the plate.

David Vidal put the Patriots up 2-0 with a solo home run (19) in the fourth inning.

The Blue Crabs jumped in front with four runs in the sixth inning. Eric Garcia hit an RBI single, Zach Wilson drove in a run on a groundout, and Jamar Walton followed with a two-run home run (12) to make the score 4-2.

The Patriots immediately answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Vidal tied up the game with an RBI single and Bryan LaHair then blasted a go-ahead two-run home run (8).

Southern Maryland tied up the game in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Bryant Nelson.

Ian Marshall (4-1) allowed a hit in two scoreless innings to pick up the win. Jeremy Bleich (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing a run in an inning pitched. Cody Eppley earned the save (21) by getting out of a jam in the bottom of the 12th.
