Quick response by staff at Franklin Middle School May 5 likely saved the life of a 7th grade student who collapsed, interim schools Superintendent Lee Seitz said.
Speaking at the May 7 Board of Education meeting, Seitz said the student – who was not identified – collapsed during his gym class.
Seeing that the student was not responsive, Seitz said, school nurse Kim Murray-McNee and other personnel used a defibrillator to revive him and also called 9-1-1.
The student responded to the treatment and was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. FMS vice principal Nikki Tatum went to the hospital with the student and stayed with him until his parents arrived, Seitz said.
“We are pleased to report that the student is doing well,” Seitz said.
Seitz said that FMS principal RaShawn Adams received a call from a RWJUH nurse on May 7, “commending the outstanding job of our school nurse … and the medical aid she gave to the student. She said that in her opinion, the actions of Nurse Murray-McNee are directly attributed to saving the life of this student.”
Seitz commended Murray-McNee, as well as school Safety Officer Wilton Anderson, Franklin Township Police Officer Dawn Flanders, physical education teacher Ashley Sogluizzo, Tatum “and the other members of the FMS staff whose quick response truly made a difference in the life of this young man.”
“I would also like to thank the other members of the Franklin Township Police Department and Emergency Medical Services personnel for their timely response as well,” Seitz said.
