Life Story: Susan Lakat, 92; Former Township Resident

Susan Lakat passed away May 29 at Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington. She was 92 years old.

Mrs. Lakat was born in Pitrova, Saris County, Slovakia and came to the United States through Ellis Island when she was two years old.

She lived in Binghamton NY, Jersey City, Somerset, New Brunswick and North Brunswick. She was a graduate of New Brunswick High School. She was a longtime member of Sts. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Somerset where she volunteered to work the bingo and was a member of the Altar Rosary Society. She was employed for many years by the Department of Labor and an Unemployment Intake Clerk. She retired in 1987.

Mrs. Lakat was predeceased by her husband Ferdinand in 2008. She was also predeceased by her brother John Fedors in 2012.

She is survived by her son Michael Lakat and his wife Cathy of Ringoes, a brother Peter Hawryluk and his wife Ann of Indiana, sister-in-law Geraldine Fedors, nieces Jetta Boschen and Patricia Helleis and nephews John Fedors and Kent Hawryluk. She will always be remembered for giving her grand nieces a dollar every time she saw them or included it in celebratory holiday cards.

Visiting will be held from 5-8 p.m. June 2 at the Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton St.

Funeral services will begin at 9:45 a.m. June 3 at Gleason Funeral Home, followed by a 10:30 a.m. funeral mass at Sts. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Somerset.

Interment will follow at St. Peter Cemetery in New Brunswick.
