Sugar Land Tops Somerset 5-3 In Series Opener

Sugar Land, Texas –  The Somerset Patriots (5-2) late rally fell short Friday night in a 5-3 loss to the Sugar Land Skeeters (7-0) at Constellation Field.

The Skeeters opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second inning on a two-out RBI single to right-center off the bat of Kyle Kubitza. Sugar Land increased its lead to 4-0 with a three-run fourth inning, highlighted by a Courtney Hawkins RBI single and a Kubitza two-run double.

Somerset responded in the top of the fifth with a solo home run from Adam Weisenburger (1). After Sugar Land regained a four-run lead in the bottom of the inning on a Matt Chavez (1) solo home run, an RBI groundout from Justin Trapp in the sixth brought the Patriots back within three.

Scott Kelly brought the Patriots within two in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly to right field, but that wound up being the final run of the ballgame.

Logan Bawcom (1-0) earned the win after he allowed one run on three hits over five innings of work. Trevor Foss (0-1) was saddled with the loss after yielding four runs on eight hits over 3.2 innings pitched. Felipe Paulino (2) earned the save with a scoreless ninth inning.

Somerset brings southpaw Aaron Laffey (0-0, 0.00 ERA) onto the mound against Sugar Land righty Brett Marshall (0-0, 0.00 ERA) Saturday night in the second game of the weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm CT (7:05 pm ET).
