Stein Mart Closing Franklin Park Store In October

Stein Mart announced it will close the Franklin Park store in mid-October.

The Stein Mart department store in Franklin Park will close in mid-October, a company spokeswoman said July 26.

The store, located in Franklin Towne Center on Route 27, is one of six Stein Marts slated for closure this year, said spokeswoman Linda Tassef.

The store is closing, she said in an email, because “we were at the end of a lease term and unfortunately the store was not meeting our expectations.”

Liquidation sales will begin on Aug. 3, she said.

Tassef said the company will “make every reasonable effort to relocate” as many of the store’s approximately 40 employees as possible.

Based in Jacksonville, Fl., Stein Mart also has stores in Cherry Hill, Ocean, Holmdel and Watchung.

The 32,200-square-foot store – one of two department stores in the township – was opened in March 2008.

With Stein Mart’s closing, K-Mart in Rutgers Plaza on Easton Avenue will be the only department store in the township.

Three Stein Mart stores – in La Mirada Cal., Ocean Park, NY, and Columbia, S.C. – were closed in February, Tassef said.

A store in Chantilly, Va. will close in September, and a store in Las Vegas, Nevada will close in October, she said.

“We appreciate the loyal customers that have supported our Franklin Park store and hope that they will continue to shop with us” in the remaining New Jersey store, Tassef said in the email.
