Patriots Rally For 8-5 Win Over Revolution
York, PA – The Somerset Patriots (31-26, 69-58) scored three runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to rally past the York Revolution (30-25, 70-55) to win 8-5 Sunday afternoon in the rubber match at PeoplesBank Ballpark. Somerset tallied its 37th come from behind win as the bullpen tossed 5.1 scoreless innings to pave the way for the victory.
“We are a team that’s strong in all three areas of baseball and that’s pitching, defense and hitting and we’ve been showcasing that,” said Carlos Guzman. “This is the best time of year as all these games are crucial.”
The Patriots jumped out to a 3-0 advantage. Kyle Roller slugged a home run (9) in the second inning while Eric Farris and Aharon Eggleston added RBI singles in the third. Eggleston has now reached base safely in 39 straight games which is the longest in the Atlantic League this year.
York scored all five of its runs in the fourth inning. Bryan Pounds coaxed a bases loaded walk. Josh Wilson sliced a two-run double while Jared Mitchell hit a two-run single.
With the score 5-3 in favor of York heading into the eighth inning, Eggleston, Farris and Bryan LaHair drew back-to-back-to-back walks. David Vidal would line out, but Pounds made a throwing error and the miscue led to a run. With his team down one and the bases loaded with two outs, Guzman ripped a go ahead two-run double to put the Patriots in front 6-5.
“I’m not that much of a religious guy but today I felt the need to go to the team Sunday Chapel session to get locked in and it worked, “ said the affable outfielder. “Last night was the same situation in the eighth inning for me and I didn’t come through. But baseball is the best sport because you’ll always get another chance.”
Farris added a two-run single in the top of the ninth inning. Farris has now hit safely in 14 of his last 16 games.
Randy Boone (2-3) earned the win throwing two scoreless innings. Scott Rice (4-2) suffered the loss as he yielded three runs in 0.1 innings. Jon Hunton secured his league leading 35th save with a perfect ninth inning.
The Patriots finished their nonstop seven game road trip with a 5-2 mark.
