Life Story: Arlene Smith; Tennis Player, Travel Agent

Arlene Smith (nee Goldman) Somerset and Boyton Beach, Fl., passed away March 6 at Bethesda Hospital East in Boynton Beach with Bud, her husband of 60 years, by her side.

Arlene was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 12, 1935 and attended Lincoln High School. She resided in Brooklyn until 1969 when she and Bud moved to Livingston. While in Livingston, Arlene became an avid tennis player (primarily at Spring Garden Country Club) and enjoyed her weekly canasta games. In 2004, she and Bud moved to Somerset and became “snowbirds,” spending time in both Somerset and Boynton Beach.

Arlene was a homemaker until the mid-1970s when she became a secretary for a society band (Milt Davidson) and, shortly thereafter, a travel agent where she took advantage of the perks of being a travel agent as often as she could. In addition to traveling, Arlene had a passion for dancing and her happiest times were dancing at family events.

Arlene is survived by her husband Bud, her children Jill of Los Angeles, Ca. and Michael (Cindy), of Selbyville, De. and her five grandchildren Madeline (Neil), Rebecca, Benjamin, Tyler and Mackenzie.

A funeral service for Arlene will be held at 11 a.m. March 10 at the Gleason Funeral Home 1360 Hamilton Street in Somerset.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the American Lung Association or American Heart Association.
