‘Jersey Cares’ Volunteers Spruce Up Pine Grove Manor School
More than 200 volunteers from around the state joined forces to spruce up Pine Grove Manor School May 6, during the 19th annual Jersey Cares Day.
Jersey Cares is a Livingston-based organization that pairs volunteers with community projects. The group has worked in the district in the past, in both Pine grove Manor and MacAfee Road schools.
On this latest visit, the volunteers were split between doing revitalization projects, and the group’s “Service Express” craft projects.
The revitalization projects included picking up garbage and other landscaping chores, painting the nurse’s office and the child study room and creating muraled planters and placing them at the school’s entrance.
In the Service Express room, volunteers were making crafts such as superhero capes for children, painting small canvas murals and decorating indoor hopscotch mats.
“We’ve worked a lot with Jersey Cares in the past, last year they did a bunch of murals with our mascot, Tuxedo,” said Lynn Schussel, the school counselor.
“It’s our mission,” Jessica McKenzie, Jersey Cares’ service events coordinator, said of the event. “We try to address different community issues through volunteerism. We make our projects fun, easy and meaningful throughout the state.”
