Gunther Farm Lease to be Put Up at Auction

The farming lease for Gunther Farm will be put out to bid, now that the last lease has been rescinded by the Township Council.

The council voted at its Sept. 10 meeting to rescind the lease that was held by GM Hay and Straw. The five-year lease on the 75-acre property was due to expire on March 31, 2014, according to the resolution.

GM Hay and Straw asked for the rescission, according to the resolution.

Township Manager Bob Vornlocker said that no date has been set for the lease auction.

The township leases “hundreds of acres to farmers all over town,” he said.

The leases are low-cost, “somewhere between $20 and $40 an acre,” Vornlocker said.

The township acquired the land in 1998 as part of a Hovnanian development on Suydam Road, he said.
