Central Jersey College Prep Charter School has been named a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.

The school, located on Schoolhouse Road, is one of 279 public and 50 private schools being so named, according to a press release from the school.

The school’s current Chief Education Officer, Namik Sercan, and Tarkan Topcuoglu, the principal at the time of nomination, will represent CJCPCS at a two-day awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.

According to the release, schools are nominated for the award by their state department of education, and then complete a comprehensive application about school practices. Schools may apply for status as Exemplary High Performing—among the top schools in a state—or Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing—schools making the fastest progress in their state in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

The 10-year-old school has won several awards, including in 2012-13 when JerseyCAN designated the school as a Top Ten Middle School; 2013-14, when the school was recognized as Exemplary Title-I school by NJ Department of Education; 2014- 15, when CJCPCS was designated a High Performing Rewards School in NJ and received a special Title I School Rewards Grant and 2015, when US News included CJCPCS in its bronze category of top US high schools. CJCPCS was also nominated for the 2016 National Title I Distinguished School Award.
