Blue Crabs Blank Patriots 4-0

6216jonesatthirdwebWaldorf, MD – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (14-26) salvaged the series finale against the Somerset Patriots (23-18) 4-0 Thursday afternoon at Regency Furniture Stadium. The Patriots only mustered two hits all game and ended their seven game road trip with a 3-4 mark.

“We were kept off balance today,” said Matt Fields, who picked up one of Somerset’s two hits. “It was just one of those days. That’s baseball. Sometimes they are better than us, sometimes we are better than them.”

In the fourth inning Jamar Walton slugged an RBI double to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Blue Crabs. It was the outfielder’s fifth RBI of the three game series.

Somerset’s best chance to tie it was in the eighth inning. Fields stroked a leadoff single. Fields, who had been struggling hitting right-handed, was batting left-handed in a game for the first time since 2011. Scott Kelly pinch ran for Fields and advanced to second on a wild pitch. But Kelly would not advance any further as the next three batters were retired.

Zach Wilson provided three insurance runs with one swing of the bat as he blasted a three-run home run (5) in the eighth inning. It was his second three-run homer of the series.

Darin Gorski (3-2) took the loss for Somerset, pitching six innings and yielding one run on five hits. Daryl Thompson (1-3) earned the win for the Blue Crabs. He came into the contest struggling with an 8.71 ERA in his first five appearances, but found his groove. The longest tenured Blue Crab tossed seven scoreless innings and only allowed two base runners (a hit and a walk).

The 2016 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford continues on the road until the team returns to TD Bank Ballpark on Friday, June 3rd for a 7:05 p.m. game against Bridgeport Bluefish.
