A township woman was cited for careless driving Nov. 2 after her car skidded off a road and landed in a lake.

Police said Courtney Smith, 21, was driving her 2007 Toyota Matrix on Van Cleef Road around 10 p.m. when she entered a curve and the car started hydroplaning.

The car hit the curb, struck a sign and the stopped in the water, police said.

Smith was not injured, refusing assistance from the East Millstone Volunteer First Aid Squad, and was able to exit the car, police said.

Police said she was sitting on the lake’s bank when they arrived.

Police said the investigation revealed that Smith was driving too fast for the weather conditions.
