Updated: Amendments to Two Ordinances Approved by Township Council, Third Tabled

Minor adjustments to two ordinances were approved at the Township Council’s Nov. 26 meeting.

The ordinances have to do with licensing and fees.

The council approved an ordinance amendment that strikes the $50 per vehicle per year fee charged to limousine companies.

Mayor Brian Levine said the change brings the township into compliance with state law.

A second ordinance change, concerning massage therapists, eliminates the requirement that massage therapists be licensed through the township.

“The state mow licenses therapists, so we don’t have to,” township clerk Ann Marie McCarthy told the council at the amendment’s Nov. 12 introduction. She said the township will continue to license establishments that provide massage therapists – since the state does not – and require that the establishments hire only licensed practitioners.

A third ordinance amendment that was up for second reading and approval was tabled until the December meeting after an amendment was made to it.

The ordinance would end the township’s practice of providing hospital and medical care benefits for retirees with fewer than 20 years of service and their dependents. The current practice was established in 2008.

The amendment would disqualify new hires from receiving lifetime medical benefits when they retire, township attorney Lou Rainone said.
