Barely 20 minutes into the start of the 30th anniversary St. Matthias Carnival, finding a spot in the church parking lot was already a dicey proposition.
The beautiful weather no doubt played a part in the huge early turnout, but it seemed as though people were ready for the event that could be called the kickoff to the summer season.
The carnival, at the church on John F. Kennedy Boulevard, runs through May 21, and features rides, games, food and a few different 50/50 raffles.
Opening night featured Hot Dog Night, and Fish Fry Night is on tap for Friday.
“Bracelet Days” are Wednesday, Thursday, and all day Sunday; purchase a bracelet for $25 and ride the rides as many times as you want that day.
Carnival hours are 6-10 p.m. through Friday, 2-10 p.m. Saturday and 2-9 p.m. Sunday.
