Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots have acquired left-handed pitcher Roy Merritt to complete an earlier trade with the Sugar Land Skeeters.
Merritt was 7-5 with a 2.53 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 103.1 innings over 19 games (17 starts) for the Skeeters this season.
In 2014 for Somerset, Merritt appeared in three games during the regular season and was 1-1 with a 2.63 and 11 strikeouts in 13.2 innings pitched.
During his time with the Somerset Patriots in 2013, Merritt was 4-2 with a 1.96 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 64.1 innings pitched in 38 games (seven starts).
He was first signed by Somerset out of the open player tryout before the 2012 season. That year, Merritt finished with an 8-8 record, a 3.22 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 153.2 innings pitched over 27 starts.
Prior to joining the Somerset Patriots, Merritt spent his entire career with the New York Mets organization, reaching as high as Triple-A.
He owns a career 33-32 record, a 3.28 ERA and 520 strikeouts over 630.1 innings pitched in 301 games.
In other team news, the Somerset Patriots have signed right-handed pitcher Angel Reyes. He has experience in the Colorado Rockies organization not only as a pitcher, but also as a first baseman, catcher, and outfielder. He last played for the organization during the 2012 season.
The team has also placed right-handed pitcher Will Oliver on the inactive list and released infielder Jose Garcia. Somerset has also re-signed right-handed pitcher Mitch Atkins and placed him on the inactive list.
The 2015 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford is winding down with one more regular season home stand scheduled for Tuesday, September 8th through Sunday, September 13th.
